Curling FAQs

To get started, you'll need:
Clean, flat-soled shoes (running shoes work fine for beginners)
Warm, comfortable clothing that allows for movement
Gloves (optional but recommended)
The club provides all other equipment including stones, brooms, and sliders for beginners. As you progress, you may want to invest in your own curling shoes, broom, and slider.
-
No! Curling is played on ice, but you don't need to know how to skate. Players wear special shoes or use sliders that allow them to glide smoothly on the ice during delivery. The motion is more like sliding than skating.
-
The basic concept is simple: get your stones closer to the center of the house than your opponent's stones. Each team throws 8 stones per end, alternating throws. Team members can sweep in front of their own stones to help them travel farther or straighter. Only stones in the house (the target area) can score points.
-
Sweeping involves using a broom to brush the ice in front of a moving stone. This can help the stone travel farther, keep it straighter, or help it curl more or less. Sweeping is a crucial part of strategy and teamwork in curling.
-
Curling has a strong tradition of sportsmanship and fair play. This includes being quiet when opponents are throwing, calling your own fouls, shaking hands before and after games, and generally being respectful to all players and the ice.
-
Yes, the club has equipment available to use for free - including brooms, sliders, and other accessories. This is especially helpful for beginners who want to try the sport before investing in their own equipment.

There's no strict dress code, but we recommend wearing warm, comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement. Avoid loose clothing that might catch on the ice. Clean, flat-soled shoes are essential (no boots or shoes with heavy treads).
